Buddhist mindfulness exercises attempt to focus the mind on one specific thing, shutting out all else in an effort to calm the mind so that we may truly know this one thing and in turn, know everything else. The most common mindfulness practice pays attention to breathing. By naming your breaths "in breath" and "out breath" as you breathe, you focus on the breath and shut out all else.
